Your Questions About Wordpress Widgets

Sharon asks…
How or where do you add widgets to Wordpress blogs?
On wordpress blogs they give you free widgets to add to your site, but I want to add external widgets to my blog. I am not sure how to paste the widget code and where to add it. Do you paste under widgets or headers or in the main body of a post?

Hi Andy,
It sounds like you are using Wordpress.com (the free service), and not the Wordpress.org software on a self hosted site.
If this is the case, then the short answer is, you can’t do that with a Wordpress.com site.
Here is a support page from Wordpress.com that explains some of the differences between the two systems:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Look under Wordpress.com cons.

You can use a pretty easy plugin called widget logic for that, which will allow you to tell worpdress where you want or don’t want your widgets displayed:

How do I place web counters and PayPal widgets on my WordPress website?
Hi, I need a step by step account on how to install a donate PayPal widget and a site counter on my Wordpress website. I just signed up for one however it seems that the website is totally different from years ago when putting widgets and plug ins. Please help.
bgc answers:
I assume you already have the code for the PayPal widget and counter? These are usually supplied by the company providing them in a form you can copy and then paste into your WP blog.
As a rule, it should simply be a matter of pasting the code into a sidebar widget in your WordPress “Appearances” section.
You need to add a “Text” widget (or more than one, if you prefer – one for PayPal, one for the counter). In each, simply edit the text widget and paste in the code you’ve been given.
There *may* be a problem with some themes in which case it can get a little complicated. However, in the vast majority of cases, the above should work.
